Age Change FAQ

Effective with the 2026-27 season, US Soccer has announced a nationwide decision to shift from birth year (calendar year) roster formation back to a school year-based age group structure. This shift will affect how teams are formed going forward. Notably, players born between August 1 and December 31 may experience a shift in age group. To determine your player’s go-forward age group, you may reference this helpful NJ Youth Soccer Age Group Designation matrix.

  • Beginning with the 2026–27 season, US Soccer is shifting from a birth year (calendar year) roster structure to a school year-based age group structure.

This means teams will now be formed using an August 1 – July 31 cutoff instead of the current January 1 – December 31 cutoff.

    • Current structure (birth year-based): January 1 – December 31

    • New structure (school year-based): August 1 – July 31

  • US Soccer and youth soccer governing bodies made this decision after reviewing data, research and feedback from across the youth soccer landscape, with the belief that this structure better supports player development and long-term engagement in the sport. Key reasons cited include:

    • Better alignment with school year groupings across much of the country

    • Helping players stay with classmates and peers

    • Reducing the number of “trapped players” (eighth graders with late birthdays who may not have both a high school and club team option in the fall)

    • Supporting long-term participation and retention in youth soccer

  • Players born between August 1 and December 31 are the most likely to experience a shift in age group or team placement under the new structure.

  • MUSC will adopt the new structure beginning with 2026–27 tryouts. Players will try out and be rostered according to the new age group designations. Team naming conventions will shift from birth year-based names to a U8–U19 format.

Example: MUSC 2019 Girls Blue → MUSC U8 Girls Blue

  • Families can reference the official NJ Youth Soccer Age Group Designation Matrix to determine their player’s age group under the August 1 – July 31 structure.

  • No. While the new structure generally aligns more closely with school grade groupings, team placement is determined strictly by birthdate, not by current grade level.

School cutoff dates vary widely across the country and even within New Jersey, so MUSC will follow the official age group designation matrix to ensure consistency.

  • MUSC may allow limited exceptions.

Any exception will be determined solely at the discretion of MUSC’s professional trainers based on what they believe is the player’s optimal developmental placement. This would typically apply in situations where a player is clearly and consistently stronger relative to their assigned age group.
